The Story

Fitness Personified Ltd. was incorporated with the State of North Carolina in 1995 as a personal training business. The owners of Fitness Personified Ltd. are my husband Rufus Singleton and I, Karin Singleton.

To both of us, this is our second career after years with IBM in various positions, including managerial. Fitness, however, had been a lifelong recreational activity for us. My husband Rufus had been a football player in high school and in college, and I had various interests including horseback riding, Tae-Kwon-Do and – most importantly to me – Squash. After some injuries, I began going to fitness clubs and did the traditional ‘club fare’ of weight training and aerobics classes.

We married in 1994, and that was also the year when I resigned from IBM Germany (I had come to the US as an international assignee), while my husband retired from that company, and we decided to go into business as Personal Fitness Trainers.

Since then, we both have made it our commitment to become the best trainers we can be. We are both members of IDEA which is a worldwide organization of fitness professionals, and we take continued education seriously. IDEA hosts the IDEA World Fitness Convention and a Personal Trainer Summit annually. From the start of our business we have attended at least one conference a year, and more often both of them; it’s just too much fun to learn. Over the course of all those years, I had the privilege to learn from the best in the industry. I saw trends come and go. It was at the convention in 2009 when I was first introduced to MELT which has become an important part of my business.

My husband passed away December 22, 2015 after acquiring an infection during a surgery. He had scheduled that surgery so that he could attend the IDEA World Fitness Convention, and I am grateful to have this as a lasting happy memory in a field that means so much to both of us.

Testimonials

Karin is the absolutely best person to help you achieve your goals, she is a consummate professional. The scope of her knowledge and commitment to continuing education is incredible. It is with great certainty that I recommend Karin, fabulous coach, motivator, and educator

Dr. Kathleen Fineco Newport

As a yoga instructor I find Karin’s private classes to be hugely beneficial to maintaining the proper balance in my body. Her masterful combination of different techniques always seems to get right to the root of the issue. I leave her classes feeling totally realigned and re-invigorated. She is simply AMAZING!

M. G.

I’ve known Karin for 20 years and been her client all that time. Karin is an exceptional lady – knowledgeable, skillful, encouraging, inspiring. She continually challenges herself through frequent and regular continuing education, as well as seeking high levels of training and certification in current and emerging techniques and concepts. An advanced MELT instructor, she has most recently completed training in “Relief Through Rolling”. She pulls from various techniques to develop a unique blend of exercises and activities targeting her clients’ particular needs, and her work with me has helped tremendously. I highly recommend Karin as a personal trainer and also for her group sessions. Regardless of your personal goal – physical conditioning, help with aches and pains, increased core strength, enhanced flexibility – Karin can develop an approach that will help you be stronger and feel better, in a positive and caring atmosphere. Karin is a marvelous and patient instructor, and everyone should have the opportunity to experience the benefits of working with this positive, energetic lady. Try one of her classes!

J. S.

Having trained with Karin for over 10 years, and in spite of various impediments, I am fitter and stronger than I have ever been. After a lifetime of avoiding exercise, I now look forward to our training sessions, both for the physical benefits and for her intelligent company.

Karin Singleton creates a warm yet challenging environment in her classes. She welcomes newcomers, asking them to come to the front of the class so she can help them perform the movements safely and effectively. With humor and firmness, she motivates everyone to push a little harder than they might at home. She regularly introduces new techniques, which keeps the sessions fresh even for the many people who have been coming to her for years. I love the mindful, meditative quality of her live classes. Her clear instructions also encourage me to do the exercises at home between classes. Thank you, Karin, for helping me become more flexible and free from pain.

L. W.

Karin’s MELT classes have helped me tremendously. The everyday joint pain I experience has dramatically decreased since beginning to MELT. Karin’s style of teaching is very motivating and her sense of humor is awesome! Karin continually researches and attends conferences and workshops to gain knowledge which she incorporates into her teachings.

I am very excited about her new class MELT: NeuroFitness for Efficient Movement that I just started taking. I know this will help me even more! Thank you Karin

Beth S.

Not everyone enjoys exercise. I’m one of the fortunate ones; I do.

I’ve worked out at half a dozen gyms in Raleigh and even more all over the country, whenever we have travelled. Add that piece of information in with my age– which I won’t elaborate on– and you have a whole lot of instructors, the good ones observed doing what they do: demonstrating, teaching, motivating, and in the case of the really good ones, also watching and correcting as much as humanly possible in a room holding a mass of bodies.

Karin is special. Not only is she “one of the really good ones,” with all the aforementioned characteristics, she goes beyond that. She is continually upgrading her many skills and certifications with her own reading and further training in the profession. Maybe even more important than all the skill she brings to the table is the fact that you can tell she really cares. Never one to “phone it in,” she continually switches things up in order to challenge and further assist you in reaching the goal of better health.

Take a class. You’ll see. Then you’ll be wishing everyone was that kind of teacher.

Mary Walden

I first discovered Karin Singleton and her MELT classes nearly four years ago and was immediately hooked – by the concept, her professionalism, and the obvious pleasure she takes in helping all kinds of bodies get stronger, more flexible and better aligned. As her program expanded into a broader NeuroFitness concept, I expanded with her – and things got better and better. Recently, I’ve added one-on-one personal training as a strong complement to the classes. Not only does she tailor the exercises to my particular needs and abilities, she also keeps things entertaining but plenty challenging, and she is not a disciple of “no pain no gain.”

Karin is expert in articulating and tackling the subtle ways that underused muscles allow stronger ones to take over, leaving our bodies working for now but compensating in ways that we’ll pay for down the road. I hate to think what would have happened to my aging body (I am 74) had I not discovered Karin at a time when we sometimes begin to wind down.

M. R.

Eighteen years I have been an active client of Karin’s.  She is the ultimate professional.  We have worked through many different aliments that a person 76 years old encountered during those years.  She is unrelenting in her approach to hold her clients to the precise recommendations she offers during our sessions.  Adaptability and versatility are adjectives I would use to describe our workouts. For these and other factors I highly recommend her services.

Dan M Averett, D.D.S.

I have been training with Karin since 2004.  Though I will always be a work in progress, I am far more mobile, flexible and stronger than I was before or could be on my own.  The addition of MELT to my training regimen has been key.  The fact that I can still play and enjoy golf despite some physical limitations means the world to me.

G. M.

My experience with Karin for over 20 years have always been great. I strongly recommend her as she takes time to get to know your needs and adapts her training accordingly and most effective. She is very knowledgeable and always researching for additional education/certification.
